Today, as I reflect on my daughter Yashada’s incredible journey of completing her secondary education through the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) with an impressive score of 88.6%, I feel an overwhelming sense of pride and gratitude.
This achievement is not just about marks; it’s about perseverance, self-discipline, and embracing an unconventional path with confidence and determination.
Facing Skepticism and Hard Questions
When we chose homeschooling and NIOS, many around us were skeptical and asked challenging questions:
• “Are you sure this will work?”
• “Will she be able to manage without a structured school environment?”
• “What about social skills and discipline?”
• “Isn’t traditional schooling the only proven way?”
Despite the doubts, we remained committed to our decision, trusting Yashada’s abilities and the flexibility that NIOS offered. Looking back, we are glad we took this path, as it provided her with opportunities beyond what a traditional school could offer.
Taking Ownership of Her Education
What makes this journey truly remarkable is how Yashada managed everything independently, proving her self-motivation and responsibility. She:
✔️ Completed the entire admission and exam process on her own.
✔️ Carefully selected her subjects and planned her study schedule.
✔️ Convinced her music teacher to allow her to play the flute instead of vocals, using her existing skills.
✔️ Proactively found a Sanskrit teacher, coordinated classes, and—most impressively—traveled from Bhugaon to the core of Pune city using public transport, a journey that was not easy but helped her gain immense confidence in commuting independently.
We never had to remind her to study; she took ownership of her learning and stayed dedicated throughout the journey.
Flexibility That Enabled Growth
Choosing NIOS offered unmatched flexibility, allowing Yashada to:
🎵 Dedicate more time to her passion for the flute, practicing at her convenience—early mornings or late at night.
🎵 Participate in flute events without worrying about missing school.
🤝 Volunteer for a nonprofit organization I work with, gaining valuable life experiences.
👩👧 Spend quality time with her younger sister, sharing knowledge and teaching her new skills.
🚌 Master independent travel—learning how to navigate the public transport system confidently, an important life skill that traditional schooling may not have provided.
Additionally, by appearing for the October batch, she saved 5-6 months of time, accelerating her academic journey and allowing her to focus on personal development.
Learning Through Challenges
The journey had its fair share of challenges.
During her practical exams, she faced difficulties and lost marks for not writing the questions due to anxiety. I reassured her that homeschooling and NIOS were an experiment, and like any experiment, there are unknowns—we learn and move forward.
Even in her Sanskrit exam, despite thorough preparation, the question pattern was different, which left her upset. I reminded her that our goal was never to prove anything to anyone but simply to clear the 10th with confidence.
The Road Ahead
While this milestone is worth celebrating, we are aware that the journey is far from over. The road ahead, with the challenges of 12th grade and beyond, will demand even more effort, focus, and determination. The higher secondary curriculum is more demanding, and Yashada is prepared to take it head-on with the same enthusiasm and dedication.
We understand that homeschooling continues to be an evolving experiment, and with each step, we learn, adapt, and grow together.
Encouragement for Fellow Parents
To parents considering alternative education paths, I’d like to say—trust your child’s potential. While the journey may invite skepticism and hard questions, with the right mindset, flexibility, and support, children can thrive beyond expectations.
We are so proud of Yashada for not just excelling academically but for growing into an independent, responsible, and compassionate individual. This experience has reassured us that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to education.
Congratulations, Yashada! 🎉 Your journey is an inspiration to all of us.
