Over the last six months, the IT industry has seen a significant decline in traction. Despite numerous discussions and plans, conversions are not happening, and new projects are facing delays. This trend is observed across both large and small companies, largely due to various geopolitical reasons. Unfortunately, this has also led to a substantial impact on the hiring of fresh graduates.
Many large service companies are postponing the joining dates of campus-hired individuals, and in some cases, they have even retracted earlier job offers. Just in the past week, I have received around ten resumes from fresh graduates seeking help or guidance.
If you are a fresh graduate looking for a job, it is crucial to acknowledge that the situation has changed compared to the post-COVID era. The demand and supply patterns have shifted, resulting in an increased availability of resources in the market.
Generative AI tools like Copilot have significantly boosted the productivity of experienced resources. The traditional team composition, where a lead with 5+ years of experience worked alongside 2-3 freshers, is evolving. Now, fresher positions are often being replaced by tools like Copilot. The cost advantage that offshoring provided, typically around 30-50%, is now achievable through investments in Generative AI tools. This shift will undoubtedly impact resourcing needs.
However, this does not signal the end of opportunities. The industry will continue to need good talent, and hiring activities will likely resume once market conditions improve. The competition will be tougher, and it will be crucial to establish the necessary readiness. In the meantime, if you are currently without a job, here are some recommendations to ensure you stand out when the market scenario improves:
1. Enhance Problem-Solving and Analytical Abilities: Develop your critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which are highly valued in the industry.
2. Improve Communication Skills: Strong communication skills are essential in any job. Work on articulating your thoughts clearly and effectively.
3. Strengthen Programming Fundamentals: Focus on mastering programming fundamentals and object-oriented concepts.
4. Study Data Structures and Algorithms: Understanding these core principles will give you a strong foundation for solving complex problems.
5. Get Acquainted with AI Tools: Familiarize yourself with generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Copilot. Don’t just use these tools; analyze and understand the outputs they generate.
6. Develop Prompt Engineering Skills: Learn how to craft effective prompts to get the best results from AI tools.
7. Work on Real Projects: Take on a real-world problem and solve it end-to-end, whether it’s a mobile application or a web application.
You don’t need to spend a lot of money to develop these skills. A laptop and an internet connection are sufficient. There are numerous free YouTube channels and affordable online courses (500-1000 INR) that offer high-quality content.
Lastly, stay connected with people working in the industry. Seek out mock interviews from your relatives or mentors. This strategy will help you stay ahead of the curve.
By focusing on these areas, you can position yourself as a strong candidate when the market rebounds. Stay resilient and keep working towards your goals. The industry will always need talented individuals, and your perseverance will pay off.
